Sandustry is a physics-driven factory game where every pixel on screen is a real, simulated resource. Sand falls and piles up, water soaks into whatever it touches, steam rises and condenses back into rain — and all of it can be mined, moved, filtered, burned, and wired into production chains. Beneath your factory, a fully destructible world hides the ruins of an ancient civilization, and digging toward those ruins is the long-term point of Sandustry.

This site is a fan-made companion for that factory. Every Sandustry page here is dated, linked back to official sources, and built to route you from your first shovel of sand to a self-running production network — whether you are still deciding where to buy the game or already untangling a mid-game slag jam.

The core loop: dig, wet, shake, research, automate

Sandustry's whole economy grows out of one loop, repeated at ever-larger scale. Dig Sand out of the terrain, soak it with Water until it turns into Wet Sand, then drop it on a shaker so Gold falls out. Gold buys research, research unlocks the conveyors, filters, and presses that do the digging for you, and the leftovers — Slag first, stranger materials later — feed the next tier of the factory. Nothing is waste in Sandustry; everything is a resource you have not automated yet.

What makes the loop feel different from other automation games is that every step is physical. Water is not an infinite menu resource: sand absorbs it, reservoirs drain, and a Sandustry factory that outgrows its water supply stalls until you melt ice, boil water into steam, and catch the rain that falls back down. Early research priorities reflect that reality — community consensus is to unlock Refining and Logistics first so belts and launchers haul sand for you, then push into filters and pipes before the gold line chokes on its own byproducts. Our beginner guide walks that opening hour step by step.

The same simulation runs deeper than water. Ice fields melt under a flamethrower, lava can be diverted into power or defense, and flowers self-replicate if you let seeds fall where they can root. Learning how each material behaves — and how two materials behave together — is most of what mastering Sandustry means.

Beyond the first gold line

Once a basic line runs, Sandustry stacks stranger materials and bigger machines on top of it. Burnt slag drops onto a Kinetic Slag Press for a second trickle of gold — the kinetic press guide and slag burner guide cover that chain — while seeds given water bloom into flowers you can burn for vital resources, which is where the flux emanator guide picks up. Mined Fluxite pays for permanent tool upgrades, and most players take the material scanner, a larger grabber, and hover movement first. Everywhere under the surface sit vaults, artifact puzzles, and colossal entities roaming the dunes — the excuse Sandustry gives you to keep digging long after the factory pays for itself.

What players and reviewers say

Two days into Early Access, Sandustry holds an "Overwhelmingly Positive" summary on Steam — 97% of 709 user reviews as of August 15, 2026. Creators who received review copies describe a factory game that is easier to learn than the genre's giants: each material transforms only once or twice, so the complexity comes from physics rather than memorized recipes. Press quotes on the store page compare Sandustry to Factorio-style automation inside a Terraria-like pixel world, and to a factory sim set in Noita's labyrinths. The common caveat in those same reviews: the launch build holds roughly five to ten hours of progression content, and it is the tinkerers who stay far longer.

Where to start in Sandustry

If this is your first session, open the beginner guide — it walks from the first dig to a stable, automated gold line and links out to every focused building guide. Still deciding where to play? The Steam page breakdown covers price, features, and languages, and you can try the free demo or play through PC Game Pass before spending anything.

Once your factory is running, the wiki reference answers "what does this machine do" questions, while the processing plant guide untangles the jams, throughput drops, and filter mistakes that stall mid-game lines. For player-made content, the mods hub covers Fluxloader and custom maps — and if you are wondering what the sandbox allows beyond that, the cheats reference lays out what is and is not possible in Sandustry.

As of August 15, 2026:

  • Early Access launched across Steam, GOG, and the Microsoft Store on August 13, 2026, with PC Game Pass availability from day one.
  • Steam runs a 35% launch discount until August 27, 2026.
  • User reviews sit at 97% positive — "Overwhelmingly Positive" — across 700+ Steam reviews.
  • The game ships in 23 languages, and Steam Workshop support for mods and custom maps is already live.
  • A first hotfix (v0.5.3) landed on August 15 with better crash logging, lower memory use for rain clouds, and clearer objective messaging.
  • The free Sandustry demo is still available and teaches the full core loop.

Demo, Early Access, or Game Pass?

There are three doors into Sandustry, and they are not the same product. The free Steam demo — released January 31, 2025, about 500 MB — teaches the full core loop on one hand-built map and is the zero-risk way to feel the physics. The paid Early Access build is the current, much larger Sandustry: creators with review copies describe a map roughly fifteen times the demo's, a factory-tier mission system, reworked artifact hunts, and far more technology. PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate include that same Early Access build on PC from day one. Pick your door: demo page, Steam guide, download guide, Game Pass status, and the release date timeline.

The Sandustry community

Sandustry is single-player, but its community is busy. The official Discord hosts announcements, bug reports, and the modding scene that grew up around the demo — the developer is active there and on the Steam forums, and both channels feed real bug reports into real patches. The Discord page explains what lives where. Custom maps and total overhauls already circulate for both the demo and the Early Access build — start with the mods hub and the custom maps page. If the game launched in the wrong language, the language settings page fixes that in under a minute.

FAQ

What is Sandustry?

Sandustry is a single-player factory automation game where every pixel is a physically simulated resource. You dig sand, wet it, shake gold out of it, research new machines, and automate production chains across a fully destructible world.

Is Sandustry free?

A free demo is available on Steam and teaches the full core loop. The complete game is a paid Early Access title — as of August 15, 2026 it carries a 35% launch discount, and it is also included with PC Game Pass.

Where can I play Sandustry?

On PC: Steam for Windows, macOS, and Linux, plus GOG and the Microsoft Store, with PC Game Pass availability from day one. The free demo lives on Steam.

Does Sandustry have multiplayer?

No. Sandustry is single-player only, and no co-op or multiplayer mode has been announced. The community shares mods, custom maps, and factory builds on Discord and Reddit instead.

Who makes Sandustry?

Sandustry is developed by Lantto Games — essentially a one-person studio — and published by Hooded Horse, the publisher behind Manor Lords. It entered Early Access on August 13, 2026 after a free demo spent a year and a half building an audience.

How long is Sandustry?

Creators who received Early Access review copies report roughly five to ten hours of progression content at launch, with far more replay time for players who enjoy rebuilding and optimizing factories. The developers plan about a year of Early Access updates.
